Interested What is Media? Bunch of Codes of Ethics

In history it is an empire, in art it is a material used to produce work, in geography it is a village in Henderson Country, Illinois.

Media, we are going to analyze now is Mass Media. It is envisioned to reach large audience. Mediums might be as following: television, radio, broadcasting, and newspaper. Each of them is specific and needs to be treated differently. In spite of differences, the main purpose of them is to serve society. Media always shows the level of democracy in the country. If media does not provide us with the diverse viewpoints and information that is unbiased then the democracy level is undermined.

Common Cause says that media and democracy has four goals: “The first is fighting media consolidations, the second is protecting and strengthening public broadcasting, following is ensuring that the Internet remains a vibrant open and competitive outlet for citizen discourse, and the last is developing and advancing a long-term agenda for a more democratic media.”

But despite above-mentioned aspects there are too many details that should be taken into consideration. One of the guiding principles for journalists is - minimize harm. Level of professionalism determines further development of the events journalist is going to highlight.

While thinking over this principle-Minimize Harm one should ask him/herself whether event should be reported or not, who are the people which need to be informed about the fact, whether facts are strenthened by evidents and are not rumors, what one can do when the facts are contradictory and what is the impact on the community…

Theses are the questions that need to be answered and only after that one should decide whether publish or not, highlight or not.

Fred Brown says in his article “Asking right questions a key to minimizing harm” that: “The heavyweight in this balancing act is the truth. Telling the truth is a journalist’s overriding duty. Considering the consequences is a tempering element — a smaller element, but nonetheless an important one.In the simplest terms, minimizing harm requires being sensitive to the consequences of what you do as a journalist.”

Ethical journalists treat sources, subjects, and colleagues as human beings deserving of respect. Ethical journalism demands critical thinking and knowledge of those codes that are internationally accepted, but it is not easy task. Media mostly is limited in time; in majority cases journalists face ethical quandary and when dilemma arises journalists have consultations with managers. But being professional and ethical journalism means that one can decide him/herself, in right way, in the case when manager’s consultation is impossible to obtain.

Despite the fact that minimizing harm is one of the first things a journalist should care about, stories and facts sometimes do not give us ability to minimize harm as much as possible. Harm may be expressed in the form of reputation, and not only.

Bob Steele, who teaches journalism ethics at the Poynter Institute, asks: "What if the roles were reversed? How would I feel?" That is a very good question. Individuals answer it individually but professional and ethical journalist’s answer should satisfy international standards and should be based on codes of ethics.

Follow Codes of Ethics

Each of us is individual. We have our views, opinions and interests. Statement -Act Independently and following this statement in life shows the abilities we have, emphasizes our values and responsibility to ourselves and to the society we serve or belong to. It is the best way of dealing with each field: education, business, or media. One should be free of any private interest while serving society.

In majority cases professional independence is the guarantee of success. Main reason I am going to comment on this issue, “Act Independently,” is the article “ABC Says It Was Outbid for Paris Hilton Interview”. The article covers issue on bidding for the interview, published at NYTimes. I have no right and competence to discuss and evaluate this case, but the media response to this event is worth of paying attention.

New technology development and globalization made its effects nearly in each field. One of them is media. Competition is high; news values are different for different media sources. But for those who will read the article, it is clear that the main issue is that media should serve publics interest and should not pay for news. We have wide choice. There are events that need to be highlighted and one never needs to pay fot an interview. But in this highly competitive world media sources compete and struggle for the exclusive interviews to enlarge the audience and have guaranteed advertisers that are the main sources of media profitability. Regardless of the fact, not each way of dealing with problem is acceptable. Society of professional Journalists introduces code of ethics that you can find and read at SPJ .

Code of ethics says unambiguously that journalist should be free of any interest other than the publics right to know. The list provided in these codes of ethics emphasizes that journalist should be wary of sources offering information for favors or money; and should avoid bidding for news. That says what is the decision that should be made.

Nowadays when media became one of the important businesses in the world that serves society and not only, it is hard to say whether the news provided by the media channel comes out of the public interest or private. It is difficult to control. As far as each of us is individual by nature one needs to be highly professional to serve the society. Media is special field and needs special attitude to the work, it should be treat as seriously as possible.Still the myth of media objectivity is under doubt. There is no person without subjective attitude towards an issue. There is no difference whether the issue is highlighted for media or not, individuals are subjective. Media should provide us with the information and with comments of professional experts on the event. That is the best way of covering issue.Media should not only provide with the news but also educate society that is the main destination of it.

Today, media is in crisis especially in developing countries, there is no production of new programs, space is mostly filled with news that cover the same news several times during a day. It is called recycling. One can ask “What about CNN?” The answer is simple. CNN’s format is news oriented. It does not have borders and covers the world news not only local. As for the developing and small countries there is no possibility to do that, no qualified staff, no such number of news as CNN has, and no so much money to provide this service to the society.

There is no ideal thing in the world but the best way to improve the quality of any product is using the system of benchmarking. Best practices need special treatment. Even the best practice in one country might not be suitable for the other but researches and situation analysis will give professionals ability to make best choice. The best phrase one can say at the end of the article is that: “Journalists should be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.”

IT vs.Content or Cooperation?

Information technology, the sphere that goes through transformation stages and transfers the ways of communication itself, becomes of great importance. The value that obtains IT is increasing each day, and gives youth opportunities realize their abilities and strengths.

According to the research presented by Forrester teleconference, Laurie Orlov, vice president Forrester Research, based in Cambridge, Mass, says that "Enterprise IT is going through a metamorphosis. The career path is not as straightforward as it once might have been. You used to start as a programmer or operator and move up the ladder, and this is no longer the case”.

As each sphere, IT undergoes different levels of development, one can say IT does that the most intensively than any other one. According to eWeek CHANNEL INSIDER: “The previous enterprise IT path followed one of four routes. In the sourcing path, an IT professional moved from vendor administration and relations to sourcing contracts and ecosystem management. In the management path, the worker moved from project management to portfolio or IT line-of-business management. The innovation path took an IT pro from a business analyst position through process management and ownership to internal consulting. In the final, and often considered the most exciting path, the IT worker moved from entry-level tech up the ladder through integration to architect.”

These routes are not necessarily to be led separately. The cooperation of the routes will lead to more profitable exchange of values. As Forrester says “IT will be considered not so much a finish line but a gateway to other roles in the company.”

It is worth mentioning that the successful accomplishment of work or the development of IT sphere is not determined only by IT works, programming, but business analytical skills, too. There is no success without assuming events in chain.

IT changes too many things in the surrounding world. Though the Earth is of the same size as it was in the past, it becomes smaller and smaller, and why? Can you remember how many days it was needed to get information in previous centuries? Probably you do not remember, but probably you have read about that in the books of history or some other. Communication level has increased, the more we know, the more we do, the more chances we have. IT is no longer only the comfort or only the way of improved communication, it involves “integrating applications and managing business and vendor relationships, and has globally dispersed virtual teams. Most pertinently, the new IT professional works in a business, not IT context.”

There is no IT product without the content created by the human being. In the highly competitive world of communications, full of hard or soft news, informatiive or entertainment information, two sources are needed to be used, one working on technical side and the other on the content, but their cooperation is the bases of business in the broadest understanding of this term.
