ATRAP- Predict Upredictable

Every day we witness thousands of innovations in the technology world. These innovations comprise nearly each field factually developed. But the one, University of Arizona Professor Jerzy Rozenblit has received a $2.2 million grant to design computer software that will analyze volatile political and military situations for, is absolutely unique.

The software will predict the actions of paramilitary groups, ethnic factions, terrorists and criminal groups, while aiding commanders in devising strategies for stabilizing areas before, during and after conflicts. That is not limit of its capabilities It will have many civilian applications in finance, law enforcement, epidemiology and the aftermath of natural disasters, such as hurricane Katrina, too.

Rozenblit, who holds the Raymond J. Oglethorpe Endowed Chair in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the UA admits that ATRAP - The Asymmetric Threat Response and Analysis Project is a massively complex set of computer algorithms (mathematical procedures) that sift through millions of pieces of data, considering many factors including social, political, cultural, military and media influences.

For accomplishment the work ATRAP will use sophisticated computational methods based on: game theory
co-evolution
genetic development models

Genetic algorithms analyze situations in an evolutionary context, where actions with the highest “fitness factor” gravitate toward one another, produce offspring and eventually rise to the top.

The algorithms will recognize links and patterns within the data and to find connections.“The computer can look at very, very complex data sets that as an individual or even as a group of individuals, you could never analyze,” said Brian Ten Eyck, ATRAP project manager and associate director for research support in ECE. “The computer can bring the patterns and connections to the surface and can predict scenarios that might never occur to human analysts.”

According to the “Inside Arizona Business” Deep Blue, the first computer program to beat a world chess champion, is not exact but a good example of how ATRAP can respond to changing factors, Ten Eyck explained. “Every time its opponent made a move, Deep Blue recalculated all the possibilities and likely courses of action, eventually settling on the fittest move that would achieve its goal of winning the game.”

Rozenblit said: In unstable areas, winning often means establishing an environment in which the factions co-exist in a win-win situation or at least in an equilibrium in which there are no rewards, and some penalties, for disturbing the status quo. Ultimately, the software program will be designed to display data in graphical, 3-D and other forms that can be quickly grasped, allowing decision makers to rapidly respond to changing situations, Rozenblit said.

The goal is to handle conflict areas in a manner that leads to stability and support so war is not necessary,” Rozenblit said. “That’s the philosophy behind much of the ATRAP effort.” Conflicts like Kosovo and Somalia that need quick response emphasizes the need for the high quality harnessing in order to react very rapidly. Parallel computing is the best way to response to the situation timely.

The benefit of the software relates to the Students and Local Contractors, too. As Rozenblit said “There is a dire need for engineers with expertise in this area and our graduate students and undergraduates are in great demand.” The evidence to this statement is that one student who recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree after doing research related to ATRAP was hired at an annual starting salary of $90,000.

To be straight Blog celebrates 10 years from the day it was first launched. According to Wikipedia the term "weblog" was coined by Jorn Barger on 17 December 1997. As for the "blog," it was coined by Peter Merholz, who jokingly broke the word weblog into the phrase we blog in the sidebar of his blog Peterme.com in April or May of 1999.

There are several types of blogs. According to Wikipedia Media type blogs are: vlog, linklog, sketchblog, photoblog, tumblelogs, Phlog, moblog

According to the genres: political blogs, travel blogs, fashion blogs, project blogs, niche blogs, dreamlogs, Splog, Slog

Technorati, estimates that there are 120,000 new blogs being created every day. Posts are being added to blogs at a rate of 17 per second - a total of 1.5 million per day, says the firm.

The importance of Blog increases day by day. Blogs carry different purposes. Some blogs are of personal character, others are a kind of tools that organize the communities of the same interests that many people have and share among them.

In 2004 Gov. Howard Dean was the first presidential candidate who made very effective political use of a blog. The campaign was the unique one as the result of all the efforts done by the blog was the raise over 50 million dollars and Howard Dean became the Democratic front runner until the primary elections.

According to the results of Technorati, it tracks more than 112 million blogs. While in 1998 there were about 23. So how many times greater is the number of blogs today in comparison with the result of 1998? It is about 486956,...well, sorry but I am lazy to write other numbers. One can see that the superiority level is huge. :-)

The prognoses are so much optimistic that DeWolfe and the co-founder Tom Anderson agree to have contacts with the company for 2 more years. According to the statistics the number of users of MySpace, after adding it to the ownership of Rupert Murdoch, has increased, and doubled from 90 million to 188 million. “

Ifra Training

The world’s leading organization Ifra for newspapers and media publishing, cooperates with the Daily Telegraph, and aims to organize training to teach senior editors how to manage seismic organizational change.

Nowadays focus falls on managing fundamental changes in newspaper culture. As one can guess the future of newspaper is a bit cloudy. The decline in newspaper use is determined by the existence of such strong competitors as television and Internet, especially in developing countries. The 57th annual World Newspaper Congress, held in Istanbul in June 2004, reported circulation increases in only 35 of 208 countries studied. Internet competition decreases the use of clasified ads in the newspapers. The segment interested in jobs, cars has changed their address of searching the information from newspapers to internet. Even there are clasified ads in newspapers the user is more internet focused.

But whether the future of newspaper changes or not, the information and the articles published in the newspaper should be objective, ethical and in the public interest. Randy Covington, director of IFRA's US Newsplex operation, told Journalism.co.uk: "I think it's probably a first for the US, we're taking some of the lessons from Europe and particularly some of the lessons and major changes last year from the Daily Telegraph, in London, and sharing those lessons with the US newspaper industry.”

The review of the newspaper development gives the specialists ability to study the issue deeply, find out mistakes, strengths and weaknesses of the newspaper. Training will be held by Infa in October and will reveal many innovative methods and practices. Covington adds: “They need to be broad, they need to by systemic and they need to be focused on the audience and not the newsroom."

The initiative of the Ifra will lead professionals to more objective, innovative, impartial and unbiased journalism that will be enhanced by good managerial skills of media managers.

Interested What is Media? Bunch of Codes of Ethics

In history it is an empire, in art it is a material used to produce work, in geography it is a village in Henderson Country, Illinois.

Media, we are going to analyze now is Mass Media. It is envisioned to reach large audience. Mediums might be as following: television, radio, broadcasting, and newspaper. Each of them is specific and needs to be treated differently. In spite of differences, the main purpose of them is to serve society. Media always shows the level of democracy in the country. If media does not provide us with the diverse viewpoints and information that is unbiased then the democracy level is undermined.

Common Cause says that media and democracy has four goals: “The first is fighting media consolidations, the second is protecting and strengthening public broadcasting, following is ensuring that the Internet remains a vibrant open and competitive outlet for citizen discourse, and the last is developing and advancing a long-term agenda for a more democratic media.”

But despite above-mentioned aspects there are too many details that should be taken into consideration. One of the guiding principles for journalists is - minimize harm. Level of professionalism determines further development of the events journalist is going to highlight.

While thinking over this principle-Minimize Harm one should ask him/herself whether event should be reported or not, who are the people which need to be informed about the fact, whether facts are strenthened by evidents and are not rumors, what one can do when the facts are contradictory and what is the impact on the community…

Theses are the questions that need to be answered and only after that one should decide whether publish or not, highlight or not.

Fred Brown says in his article “Asking right questions a key to minimizing harm” that: “The heavyweight in this balancing act is the truth. Telling the truth is a journalist’s overriding duty. Considering the consequences is a tempering element — a smaller element, but nonetheless an important one.In the simplest terms, minimizing harm requires being sensitive to the consequences of what you do as a journalist.”

Ethical journalists treat sources, subjects, and colleagues as human beings deserving of respect. Ethical journalism demands critical thinking and knowledge of those codes that are internationally accepted, but it is not easy task. Media mostly is limited in time; in majority cases journalists face ethical quandary and when dilemma arises journalists have consultations with managers. But being professional and ethical journalism means that one can decide him/herself, in right way, in the case when manager’s consultation is impossible to obtain.

Despite the fact that minimizing harm is one of the first things a journalist should care about, stories and facts sometimes do not give us ability to minimize harm as much as possible. Harm may be expressed in the form of reputation, and not only.

Bob Steele, who teaches journalism ethics at the Poynter Institute, asks: "What if the roles were reversed? How would I feel?" That is a very good question. Individuals answer it individually but professional and ethical journalist’s answer should satisfy international standards and should be based on codes of ethics.

Follow Codes of Ethics

Each of us is individual. We have our views, opinions and interests. Statement -Act Independently and following this statement in life shows the abilities we have, emphasizes our values and responsibility to ourselves and to the society we serve or belong to. It is the best way of dealing with each field: education, business, or media. One should be free of any private interest while serving society.

In majority cases professional independence is the guarantee of success. Main reason I am going to comment on this issue, “Act Independently,” is the article “ABC Says It Was Outbid for Paris Hilton Interview”. The article covers issue on bidding for the interview, published at NYTimes. I have no right and competence to discuss and evaluate this case, but the media response to this event is worth of paying attention.

New technology development and globalization made its effects nearly in each field. One of them is media. Competition is high; news values are different for different media sources. But for those who will read the article, it is clear that the main issue is that media should serve publics interest and should not pay for news. We have wide choice. There are events that need to be highlighted and one never needs to pay fot an interview. But in this highly competitive world media sources compete and struggle for the exclusive interviews to enlarge the audience and have guaranteed advertisers that are the main sources of media profitability. Regardless of the fact, not each way of dealing with problem is acceptable. Society of professional Journalists introduces code of ethics that you can find and read at SPJ .

Code of ethics says unambiguously that journalist should be free of any interest other than the publics right to know. The list provided in these codes of ethics emphasizes that journalist should be wary of sources offering information for favors or money; and should avoid bidding for news. That says what is the decision that should be made.

Nowadays when media became one of the important businesses in the world that serves society and not only, it is hard to say whether the news provided by the media channel comes out of the public interest or private. It is difficult to control. As far as each of us is individual by nature one needs to be highly professional to serve the society. Media is special field and needs special attitude to the work, it should be treat as seriously as possible.Still the myth of media objectivity is under doubt. There is no person without subjective attitude towards an issue. There is no difference whether the issue is highlighted for media or not, individuals are subjective. Media should provide us with the information and with comments of professional experts on the event. That is the best way of covering issue.Media should not only provide with the news but also educate society that is the main destination of it.

Today, media is in crisis especially in developing countries, there is no production of new programs, space is mostly filled with news that cover the same news several times during a day. It is called recycling. One can ask “What about CNN?” The answer is simple. CNN’s format is news oriented. It does not have borders and covers the world news not only local. As for the developing and small countries there is no possibility to do that, no qualified staff, no such number of news as CNN has, and no so much money to provide this service to the society.

There is no ideal thing in the world but the best way to improve the quality of any product is using the system of benchmarking. Best practices need special treatment. Even the best practice in one country might not be suitable for the other but researches and situation analysis will give professionals ability to make best choice. The best phrase one can say at the end of the article is that: “Journalists should be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.”
